In keeping with its thrust areas, in the academic year 2019-20, and up to September 2020 GSC-JDMC organized the following programmes, events, and activities:
I Pedagogy:
(i) Book Club Activities
GSC Book Club meets every 15 days and has had two meetings between August- September 2020 on Google meet. Students are supposed to read at least 15 pages a day and meet twice a month to discuss the books and debate on the key issues they find relevant. Every month 5 students are required to make a presentation on 250 pages from the books they have chosen. Movies on Mahatma Gandhi are also shown and discussed through the Gandhi Cinema initiative. In the current year, there are 65 students in the GSC Book Club.
(ii) Distinguished Speaker Series Seminar: National Seminar on Gandhi in His Times and Ours, 4 October 2019.
GSC-JDMC commemorated Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary and JDMC’s Diamond Jubilee by organizing a DSS National Seminar on the theme Gandhi in His Times and Ours on October 4, 2019. The speakers included eminent academicians Prof Sudhir Chandra, Prof Shahid Amin (DU, rtd.), Prof. Alok Rai (DU, rtd.), Dr. Nishikant Kolge (CSDS), and Dr. Rinku Lamba (JNU). Prof. Sudhir Chandra’s keynote address emphasized the relevance of Gandhian morality and ethics in present times, and dwelt upon the close association of JDMC’s founder Shri Brij Krishan Chandiwalla with Mahatma Gandhi.
(iii) Bal Swaraj: An Interactive Session and a Photo Exhibition on Gandhi in collaboration with Delhi Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) and Internal Quality Assurance Cell, JDMC on November 6, 2019. Mr. Priyank Kannongo, Chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Mr. Uttam Kumar Sinha (Joint Director, National Gandhi Museum,) and Ms. Ratna Saxena (Centre for Research and Advocacy for Child Rights and Persons), Mr. Shashank Shekar (Advocate and Social Worker) and Ms. Jyothi D. Rathee from the DCPCR addressed the issue of sexual exploitation of women and children.
(iv) Lecture on ‘Gandhi and Caste’ delivered by Dr. Nishikant Kolge, CSDS on March 15, 2019.
II. Social Outreach, Scholarship, and Mentorship Programme:
(i) Gandhi Study Circle Covid-19 Food-relief Report
Following the pandemic and subsequent nationwide lockdown, GSC-JDMC and its donors supported a local initiative in Rani Bagh, East Delhi to provide ration kits to the eighty-three underprivileged migrant labor families who had been the most affected by the health and financial crisis.
III. Handloom and Handicraft Stall, RUAAB – SEWA - GSC collaborated with Ruaab, an initiative of the well-known cooperative Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) during the college annual festival SYMPHONY, January 8-10 2020 to promote women artisans and Indian handicraft tradition.
IV. Student competitions and excursions to Gandhian sites:
(i) An Intercollege Photography Competition on the occasion of 150 years of Gandhi Jayanti was organized by GSC-JDMC. The best entries were part of an exhibition on Gandhi in Our Present.
(ii) A year-long Exhibition on Bapu was jointly put up by GSC-JDMC and Lumière: the Film and Photography Club, JDMC. This photo exhibition adorns the Library corridor at JDMC
(iii) Walk-the-Talk With Gandhiji: Letter Farms and Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, New Delhi in collaboration with GSC-JDMC organized a unique postcard writing competition on August 14, 2019, to celebrate the 72nd Independence Day. Over 150 postcards were written addressing various social changes needed in the country.
(iv)Trip to Rajghat, National Gandhi Museum, and Gandhi Smriti Museum: Students of GSC-JDMC visited Rajghat to seek inspiration from and pay homage to Bapu. S. Sriteja, Aparajita, Priyanka, Ritu and Tanu documented these trips through photo-stories.
