Vision

The concept of Equity, unlike equality recognizes the historical disadvantages and limitations faced on grounds of gender. The centre for Gender Equity Studies aims to redress this imbalance, and aims to make our students aware of the historical and cultural constructions of gender as well as, help them work towards a society oriented towards gender equity in personal and professional spheres. The Centre is interdisciplinary and promotes research as well as activism and social outreach. It encourages a multipronged approach and offers a wide spectrum of workshops, opportunities for interactions, networking, internships, field trips, legal literacy sessions, creative endeavours, health camps and safe spaces for discussion.

Mission

• To help build a nation of strong, aware, confident, well- informed and compassionate women
• To help understand contemporary notions of gender construction
• Raise awareness about women’s rights as well cultural perceptions about gender
• Facilitate research on gender issues and mentor/encourage publication in this area
• We conduct gender sensitization workshops and certificate courses across disciplines, genders, and age groups
• We offer add- on courses and offer internships that enhance skills and improve placement opportunities in areas related to gender.
• Self -defence and health check- up camps
• Open debate and discussion along with field surveys on topics related to gender
• Celebrating women of substance
• We organize national and international seminars and provide opportunities to interact with eminent scholars and gender activists.

WDC (Women’s Development Cell) and GIRL UP NITARA are societies/clubs associated with the centre.

SHORT TERM GOALS

• Through eleven training sessions with CEQUIN and one workshop with National Commission for Women, the Centre intends to guide at least 100 students in the understanding of the history and importance of gender studies.
• Through internships with organisations such as CEQUIN, JAGORI, SAFETY PIN, National Commission for Women and Delhi Commission for Women, the Centre aims to establish, within the students, a tradition of debate and encourage them to play a part in creating a gender just society.
• Through Inter and Intra University competitions (Debate, Extempore, Essay writing, and Slogan writing), the Centre shall enable the students to express and exchange their ideas pertaining to gender equity.
• The Centre proposes to start an Add-on Course (30 hours) and Training sessions on Gender Sensitization (approximately 11 sessions of two hours each) in the month of September.
• One of the aims of the Centre is to translate and publish a book on gender equity studies with the participation of students.
• Contribute to gather relief material for disaster affected areas of India, as women suffer the most when houses are destroyed by calamities.

LONG TERM GOALS

• Within four years, the Centre aims to equip more than 300 students, with the skills to participate in societal interactions with respect to gender
• The Centre aims to help break stereotypes of gender and inculcate values of a gender-just and equitable society.
• The Centre aims to engage and encourage at least 100 students every year to join internships with gender studies-related organisations, thereby empowering them to be more confident and self-reliant.
• Each year, the Centre aims to initiate at least one research project related to different aspects of Gender. This would be a collaborative effort of the students and faculty members.
• The Centre intends to organise at least one student exchange program with a rural university wherein 10-12 students from our college will get the opportunity to stay and understand the issues of rural women, and in turn, would encourage their students to come to our college to understand the issues of urban women.
