About Gandhi Study Circle

The Gandhi Study Circle JDMC is a decade old co-curricular society that strives to popularise Gandhian values in contemporary times. In 2020, GSC-JDMC became part of the Centre for Universal Values and Ethics, Janki Devi Memorial College.

Believing that our collective future depends upon what we do in the present, the Gandhi Study Circle JDMC attempts to understand and translate Gandhian ideas in contemporary times through pedagogy, social outreach, promotion of Gandhian values esp. emphasis on material simplicity and stress on service as a core societal responsibility.

Aims and Objectives

GSC-JDMC’s four main thrust areas are

(I) Pedagogy: through conferences, seminars, and lectures aiming to educate students about Mahatma Gandhi’s life and the continued relevance of Gandhian values in contemporary times. We also have a Book Club where students read Gandhian texts and discuss them.

(II) Scholarship and Mentorship: to provide financial aid and mentorship to meritorious underprivileged students and facilitate a bright future for them

(III) Promotion of Gandhian values of sustainable living, ethical consumption, and respect for manual work.

(IV) Organizing student competitions and excursions to Gandhian sites.

Future Plans:

We aim to continue being active in the propagation of Gandhian Values. We are now part of the Centre for Universal Values and Ethics, JDM College.

To organise at least two lectures every semester by eminent personalities on Gandhi’s life and thought.
To hold an intercollege debate and essay writing competition on Gandhian thought and other relevant issues.
To visit sites related to Gandhi in Delhi.
To explore ‘India of Gandhi’s Dream’: गांधी के सपनों का भारत through visits, debates, and discussions. The aim is to expose young students to the real India, its problems, and its strengths.
Organising Exhibitions on Gandhian values, trips to Gandhian sites, documenting these visits through photo-stories, commemorating Gandhian values through devotional music, poster and debate competitions on Gandhi Jayanti and Martyrs Day.
